One of the only reasons I've ever found an AppleWorks updater not to work is detailed 
in the readme file:

> If you previously installed AppleWorks 6 on your computer using the custom 
>installation option, choosing only the "AppleWorks 6 application" and omitted the 
>writing tools, re-run the installer, choose Custom Install once again, and choose to 
>install the writing tools. This will ensure the AppleWorks 6.2.4 updater will perform
