Not at all; technologically, the original Airport is almost exactly identical to the Airport that Apple sells today. The only difference is that the Base Station has more features and the cards have better encryption. Other than that, it's all still IEEE 802.11b, and the ALL Airport devices are interoperable with each other; that is, you can use older airport cards with newer base stations, and OS X sees no difference between the older and newer. > I have a cable modem and naively assume that I would simply put the > station near modem. The Airport Base Station serves as the host. If you have the older style base station, and you're going to have a wired client (the iMac), you'll need to get a cable router.
