Are these disks CD-Rs or CD-RWs? Some older CD-ROM drives can't read CD-RW discs. Although I haven't heard of this happening too iMacs yet. Have you tried to read burned CDs before with your iMac? Let your friend burn CD-Rs at a lower speed and/or let him try another brand of CD-Rs. Also if your friend is burning on a PC let him 'close' the CD and don't just let him burn a session to it (especially with s/w like DirectCD). The same goes for if he is using a Mac and burns a session with the Disc Burner s/w from Apple, if it isn't closed, you can't read it, because 8.5.1 doesn't have the Disc Burner s/w implemented. If he is using Disc Burner you could ask him to send you the "Apple Packet Media Access" extension, but dunno if that works with 8.5.1.
