Are these disks CD-Rs or CD-RWs? Some older CD-ROM drives can't read CD-RW discs.
Although I haven't heard of this happening too iMacs yet.
Have you tried to read burned CDs before with your iMac?
Let your friend burn CD-Rs at a lower speed and/or let him try another brand of CD-Rs.
Also if your friend is burning on a PC let him 'close' the CD and don't just let him
burn a session to it (especially with s/w like DirectCD). The same goes for if he is
using a Mac and burns a session with the Disc Burner s/w from Apple, if it isn't
closed, you can't read it, because 8.5.1 doesn't have the Disc Burner s/w implemented.
If he is using Disc Burner you could ask him to send you the "Apple Packet Media
Access" extension, but dunno if that works with 8.5.1.

BTW why don't you update to 8.6 which is much more stable than 8.5.1.

HTH,
Marc
