And I'm living it -- partly because I have one of those earlier G3s
(don't get me wrong, I love my rev.B iMac with a 500 MHz processor and
FireWire), and partly because I outsmarted myself, thinking that
multiple partitions would make organization easier. :-/

It turns out that OS-X (in particular, the ability to create additional
users) provides the solution that many are trying to achieve with
multiple partitions. Files or folders, that might otherwise be just
clutter for a particular user, don't have to show up at all in that
user's space, and ones that are unique to that user, don't have to
clutter the space of a different user. It's relatively easy to have an
overall back-up strategy for big issues, and separate back-up
strategies to address the user account requirements as I become aware
of them. And I can change them independently, if the situation
warrants, without having to worry about how the change might affect the
other.
