Jerry, all your points are well taken, but couldn't someone create a more accomodating environment on the current HD by cleaning it up (eg: running Disk Warrior and optomizing the disk, ie "defragging) BEFORE installing OS 10.2 ? True, it will have limitations, but would, I think, eliminate some of the problems you described.
