One other possibility is that a device on the USB (or possibly even the Firewire) bus is causing the problem. Try disconnecting all of your USB peripherals (not the mouse or keyboard though) and then startup. If this works, it probably means that the USB bus is being drawn down by too much load. The fix would then be to buy a powered USB hub and connecting the peripherals into it.
This happens under OS 9 and earlier as well. If at startup the system determines that a port, like USB, is malfunctioning, then the startup hangs. In this case, although the USB bus is actually working, the system at startup would detect that the voltage on the bus is lower than some set threshold, and decide that this meant there was a bus fault. The USB bus on Macs will only support some minimal number of devices, like 3-4, before the bus is pulled down. It may be less depending upon the devices. The solution is to buy a powered, make sure it is powered (ie: the kind that has to be plugged into an outlet), hub.
