Internet Explorer 5.2 enables a feature called Quartz Text Smoothing. This allows text to look nicer by smoothing the edges. However, small type tends to look light gray and is harder to read. You can turn this off and get more legible type by going to the Explorer->Preferences... menu and selecting the Interface Extras tab (under Web Browser). Uncheck the "Enable Quartz text smoothing" and you'll find the text easier to read.
The next thing you can do if the text is too small is press Command + (plus key) to make the text larger. Command - (minus key) makes it smaller each time you press the command. If you MUST use the mouse the same commands are under the View->Text Zoom menu. You could also customize the Toolbar and add a plus and minus icon (to make the text larger or smaller) by going to the View->Customize Toolbars... menu and dragging those icons from the main screen area to the toolbar. As for text not showing up, that is a bug in IE 5.x. To remedy that situation click anywhere on the blank area (except on a link) and press Command A to select all. That will make it all re-appear.
