There's yet another option which may be even more attractive. You buy him  a
firewire enclosure kit and let him install the HD of his choice? There's a good
selection of case kits offered by a number of suppliers. If he's a geek in
training, you can even get one from Granite Digital with an LCD display on the
front where he can observe transfer rates in "real time". <G>

The HD installation is straight forward and simple with all the case
enclosures. Mom buy's him the expensive part and he uses the HD of his choice
in it?
