Ardelli" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> kindly replied: If that IS the problem, then all you have to do is disconnect your modem from the wall or from the back of the computer for five seconds or so, then reconnect. If the modem IS holding onto the line, that should force it to drop carrier and return control to you, with any luck. John, Thanx for your reply, but I don't think that is really the answer. Remember that I also commented this about the situation: > (I did put a connector in the phone line where I can > reach it easily at the side of the computer, but unplugging > the phone line, then reconnecting it, seldom solves the problem.) 'Seldom' is the operant word here, I believe. Most often after I have unplugged the line, reconnected it*, and then try to reconnect to AOL, I repeatedly get the same message that 'the serial port is still in use/would I like to reset?' This is typical for me after AOL quits due to an error of some type, and it doesn't seem to matter which error it is, I keep getting that 'serial port in use' message... * even after waiting as long as thirty to forty-five seconds If I click 'Reset Port' AOL 'quits unexpectedly' and I have to restart the computer anyway. So it seems to be a no-win situation... I appears that the modem won't let go but I keep wondering about that serial port message... What, if not the modem, could be using the serial port? Any other suggestions as to what this might be caused by? Best Regards, Paul [frustrated in Tampa, Florida] == -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
