>>I really appreciate the time you guys are taking to help me sort the
problem
out. I guess I'm a little behind the times, as I'm still on OS 8.6. Just to
clarify, I am able to see my hard disk, it's just that the computer won't
start up from the hard disk. I've updated the hard disk driver, reformatted
the drive, and reinstalled the system software. The system folder is
blessed. I just dunno what gives!

Do you suppose there is a problem with the motherboard? Miannnn! That's
going to cost
me :-(

Forgive my ignorance, but what is 'a b0rked system folder'?

Thanks guys!

Kevin,

Like another poster, at this point some more info would be helpful: type of
iMac, size of HD, amount of RAM. I take it that you can start-up from a CD
or backup HD? If this is the case, then your motherboard, and Mac in
general, is OK. You could though have one or more of the following: a bad
system folder on your internal HD despite it being blessed; the system
folder really isn't blessed; the Start-up Control Panel is pointing to
something other than your internal HD; you have a bad HD. Can you hear the
HD spin-up when you start from the CD? After starting from the CD, can you
readily access files on the internal HD: such as, open apps that are on the
internal HD? If so, your HD is probably OK. If your HD seems OK (you can
access files and open apps that are on it) then it is likely either the
start-up control panel needs to be reset (after starting from the CD, go to
the system folder on the HD, go to the Control Panel folder, and open the
Start-up Control Panel file, then set it for internal HD), or the system
folder itself is bad (Borked). If after resetting the Start-up Control
Panel you still can't start-up from the internal, then I would suggest that
you may need to re-install the OS. If so, I would start from the CD,
totally delete (trash, then empty trash) the system folder from the HD, then
re-install. If someone thinks there is a better way, please speak up
because I for one hate, really hate, to have to re-install the OS.

An educated guess regarding the "borked system folder": there once, back in
the 1980's (?) a US judge named Bork who was nominated to become a US
Supreme Court justice. He was not approved, partially due to a statement he
made regarding the US constitution: to the effect that "...the constitution
to me is a playground...". This statement caused many people to be worried
that he would wish to jump into the constitutional laws and mess around;
thus potentially "Borking-up" our constitution. Anyway, this is how I
remember the situation.
