I haven't had that experience.  What I had, especially in OS X, was
modem disconnect during lengthy downloads - usually about 45
minutes into the process.

I tried external modems, I tried a modem "program" that was supposed
to be faster and more efficient, and I even had my phone company
install another line because of all the "noise" - none of which helped.

Finally, in disgust, I went to cable and have had no problems since.
More expensive, yes, but far less frustrating.  The download speed is
really great.
