hello, This is just a thought, & may not work.
doesn't all the tray CDROMS use a SCSI connector?
would any SCSI device work with it or in part of the chain? Based on memory, my 333 is a SCSI, but some of the wires within the ribbon were twisted & others wrapped around a metal ring. I think the later was to reduce noise through induction? I am not sure the exact reasons why the arrangement of the wires were changed. If they could accept any SCSI device, generally the vast competition would also mean lower prices. There may even be a kit that would allow you to easily use 3rd party devices.
Has any one tried this?

The CD-ROM on our tray-loading iMac stopped working. As of this morning, it doesn't eject from the button and doesn't mount discs. It does seem to spin up, and I can open it with a paper clip....

I know MCE makes a nice $199 CD-RW, but that's way outside the budget. I've found replacement drives at $80 from Nexcomp but would like to spend less.

Any suggestions where else I should look? Or maybe someone who has upgraded to the MCE drive has one for sale....

Thanks!
