About $500 when they were new. :)

Actually there are a ton of differences, far to many to go into detail 
about. Suffice to say that Photoshop works in professional 
colourspaces, with professional tools and professional power (and a 
serious learning curve if your really want to master it), whereas 
PhotoDeluxe is more like Fisher-Price's "My First Bitmap Editor" with 
lots of handholding, "wizards" and PC interface style.

I'm not saying PhotoDeluxe (or the later PhotoElements) is a bad thing 
... far from it! For most casual users it's all they need to scan, fix 
and edit nice pictures. And the price (compared to the full Photoshop) 
is a steal.

Either, they use exactly the same "plug-in" -- VistaScan, the software 
that came with your scanner.
