My rule of thumb is that if I'm down to my last 10% of the drive, it's 
time to buy an additional drive OR start archiving stuff. :)

There's a lot of factors at work to determine, but I've found that 
keeping at least a gig of space free will prevent any serious problems 
with temp files and so on.
