I'm sorry if I came across as harsh -- I intended quite the opposite! I
was putting a forceful case forward for having the people you are doing
this project for to update your system FOR you, with the argument that
newer software/hardware would make a big difference in your
productivity/efficiency and the quality of the finished project. I
didn't mean to tongue-lash you, I was thinking of how much better off
you'd be with better equipment.

LOL! Well, I was using the term "professional" in both senses:
1. Pays money
2. Of very high quality

I've done video projects on G3 iMacs -- in fact I'm doing one right now
-- and it's several orders of magnitude more work than doing it on the
right equipment (at least one G4 processor and tons of RAM and a big
display).

(and it might surprise you, but yes I do work in the arts quite
frequently. I know the money issues inherent there, but I'm a firm
believer that a job is worth doing right or it's not worth doing and
for me the right tools for the job are paramount.)

well I hope you take my first suggestion to heart then: max out the RAM.

Here's another suggestion: since you have two FW ports, I'd suggesting
buying a FAST (7200rpm) HUGE Firewire drive and putting all the video
work on that drive. This leaves your main drive free to do it's
"normal" work and since the FW drive will actually be FASTER than the
stock drive in your machine, the video work will proceed more quickly.

Not with full-screen-and-then-some apps like FCP it isn't. It
practically DEMANDS a widescreen 17" display. I've tried working with
FCP in a 15" space and it's really quite painful.
