Not true; POP is an older, simpler protocol. Basically POP servers keep a single file on the server, your in box. Your mail client can ask how many messages there are, read any one, delete any one. Generally the default is to read all the messages, and copy them to your desktop machine, where you read, organise etc, then delete them all from the server. However, you keep old messages on the server for a period or indefinitely, in this case your client is keeping a list of the messages locally to schedule deletion. I use Eudora and have it set to leave messages on the POP servers I use for 10 days. Useful if you use two machines and want to get all messages on both, or read them elsewhere using a service like mail2web.com. However, you have to be mindful if you have a hard limit on the size of your ISP mailbox. IMAP is a newer protocol that offers more features allowing, for instance, you to use several mail folders on the server. Seems to be valued in corporate settings, but personally I prefer POP as it's simpler (you can read the log of commands and responses, or log into the POP server using telnet and type in raw POP commands, which I've found useful on a few occasions). -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
