With iMovie 2.1, you have to convert the movie in DV format (with QuickTime Player Pro, $30 US). But with the free iMovie 3, you can import directy your movies into the program with the Import menu.

For the dictionnary, it depends of the program you use.
A simple program like TexEdit (included with MacOs X), or with Mail, you use the System wide dictionnaries for the spelling verification. I have a French language System and, by default, the French dictionnary is chosen. I can change the language for English, Spanish or an other language with the Spelling menu in these applications, but for a whole text.
For Appleworks, the only dictionnary installed in my iMac is the French dictionnary. May be it is possible to find the other language dictionnaries at the Apple Website. I suppose that the future iWork will use the system wide dictionnaries.

A program like Microsoft Word have several dictionnaries for several languages. With Word, you can even have a paragraph in English, another one in French, a third in Spanish, and have them corrected in their respective languages.
