Don, that sounds like impedance mis-match. Walkman headphone jacks require
low impedance (for greater fidelity) while the iMac's input soundjacks
specify high impedance for line recordings. [My recording Walkman (with
Dolby B, C) had separate output jacks, one for phones, the other line
recordings.]

A better setup is to connect from a component cassette recorder/player's
built in preamp sound output jack.
