I had a friend order a new iMac from smalldog.com. She got it and asked me to come set it up since she and her husband claim to have no abilities in that line. I set it up and it's nice, BUT, altho she told the smalldog person she was going to use it mainly for Photoshop, they sold it with only 256MB RAM. I thought they'd insist on at least 512. We tried to phone smalldog, but they were too busy to answer. She also bought a photo quality printer and v.g. scanner from them.
One, can she limp along in 10.2.7 with 256 if she runs only Photoshop when editing her photos?
Yes. In fact, the Flat Panel iMacs work quite well with only 256MB of RAM (I was quite surprised, actually), even running photoshop. Yes, there will be some speed loss as OS X pages to disk and back, but if her images are not huge (tens of megabytes) she will be fine.
If it turns out she needs the extra 256 (or more), is installation in the flatpanel simple enough that I--who have only rarely installed RAM in other Macs--can do it?
4 screws. Snap the Ram in, 4 screws. Done. Should take no more than 5 minutes, including finding a clean space to put the machine down on and hunting through the tools fore a phillips head.
It's is insanely simple.
If you're going to add more though, make it worth your time and add a 512MB module, not a 256.

that's a great quote. Of course, I work with only brain and (sometimes heart) solidifying my position as geek :)
