This is what Apple re-introduced Spring-loaded folders for. Just try using them in 'Column' view and see what I mean - it's pretty neat and completely 'reverse' navigable, and you get a file preview at the end of it, which you can;t have if you use the folders in XP.
Another possibility is to have the mass files in one window and you hard disk in 'List' view in another. expand the folders you are using and hey presto.
For the record I almost never use the tree view at the side of Windows windows because it takes up too much width on the screen once you get down 2 or 3 layers. I find the whole Windows Explorer interface clumsy and irritating compared to Mac OS X.
QUESTION: Is there a utility which will realise this in OS X ?
