Although I can force the monitor and the hard drive to sleep by choosing Sleep from the Apple menu, most of the time it won't fully go to sleep automatically. If left idle for the period of time specified in the Energy Saver Preferences, the monitor will go black, but the power indicator light will not be lit and the fan will still be working. Once in a while (rarely), the computer will automatically sleep as it should, ie: the monitor will go black, the fan will shut down and the power indicator light will be pulsating.
Although I've tried different combinations of Energy Saver Preferences and set the idle time down to one minute (for testing purposes), this has been to no avail. I'm thinking here that some activity, (perhaps my DSL connection?), is preventing the hard drive from sleeping. Does anyone out there have any ideas on what may be causing the problem with Auto Sleep?
