The only thing that surprised me was the length of time required to 'render' video and then burn the project to DVD. And, the limit on the length of your finished project seems short. Something like 60-90 minutes

Doesn't sound as if you've compressed the video at all, just burned the raw video.

I know little about this, but I am planning to get into the area soon.

I have an ATI video card which I am hoping to try soon in my MDD
2x1GHz, but I know that the raw video brought in is huge compared
to the compressed stuff in a VHs equivallent MPG file.

Don't forget that burning ex-VHS stuff to DVD format will not improve
the quality, a bit like recording an old vinyl to the harddisk and then
sticking it on a CD and thinking you've got "CD quality". (I am an
audiphile and know there are masses of views that vinyl is actually
better than CD, but it was an example).  :o)
