Rather than relate my experience with an eMac (since I don't own one -- though I'm really tempted!), I'll attempt to answer your questions directly. I think based on the experiences you've read from others that the eMac is a pretty damn nice machine for the money.
Are easy to upgrade?
Generally, yes. The RAM is easy to improve/replace, adding an Airport card is easy too.
For anything else INTERNAL, the eMac is not going to be easy to upgrade. The video card is right out (ie no upgrade possible), and replacing the HD or optical drive means disassembling the machine.
Luckily, the eMac has two FW 400 ports, making EXTERNAL expansion in these areas a snap (and virtually limitless!).
is the screen clarity good for the price.
As good as CRT gets, which is to say about 1/2 as good as LCD.
So eMac iMac what's going to be my sons next mac.
Everything I just mentioned above applies equally to the iMac except for the part about the CRT (obviously).
The iMac is a LOT smaller/lighter but also more expensive.
