That is a kernel panic, I wonder how long your up time was, days, weeks? before that happened.
I had to unplug my computer to get it to go off.
That should never be the case.
as it said in the message, reach around and , if you hold the power button down, after a few seconds, it will shut its self down.
that is the force shut down function.
If you tap the power button once briefly, it should put the iMac to sleep, when it is behaving normally that is.
If it wont shut down while holding the power button down, there is probably something physically wrong with the mac.
I highly doubt that is the case.
It is probably a bit safer for your data and stuff to use the button.
running disk utility is always a good idea.I left it off all night and now it seems to be fine. Is this a warning of something to fix or more problems to come?
Its best to boot from the OS X install CD in order to do a complete repair with Disk Utility.
Your only able to repair permissions if you run it from the hard drive that contains your System folder.
