I'm a current owner of a Bondi Blue 233 'Rev A.' iMac with 160 MB, 4 GB, and 9.1

Does anybody know of something like After Dark that I could use with MacOS 9.1? What about a funky sound utility like "Kaboom!"? I need these to be about a one megabyte download or less, since I'm on dial-up.

After Dark: if you have the original AD, I believe you will find a OS 9-compatible updater here:
http://mac.the-underdogs.org/

I went to versiontracker.com and typed in "screensaver" and got a long page of screensaver replacements. One promising-looking one is "MaxSaver" which takes advantage of OpenGL.

Kaboom! is absolutely one the best ways to fill up RAM and slow your Mac to a crawl, but if you're really keen on using it, I notice that Nova updated it in 1998, presumably for OS 9 support -- so if you have an old copy, you can try the update (also at versiontracker.com)

I'm running at 800x600 and am having a hard time viewing Google due to the extremely small font my browser is using (Both MSIE 4.01 and CS 5.0) I've set type to large in the settings menus but to no avail... Any help?

You'll need to be more specific. What is "CS 5.0" for a start, and what font are we talking about? Looking at my copy of IE 5.1 (man it's been a while!), I don't see anywhere that I can specify the SIZE of the type, but just pressing cmd-(plus) makes the type bigger for me (and cmd-minus makes it smaller).

I got it from a pawn shop, and it is missing the Apple Audio CD Player utility and/or extention. How can I get that, short of purchasing the OS? This came with no discs.

Can't help you with that -- why not just use iTunes for OS 9?

I find MacOS 9.2.2 in another system folder on the drive, but when i try to boot from it, it freezes on loading of the Open Transport extention. Only a paperclip in that little hole can restart it. If I disable OT, it will load. What can i do?

Toss it. If you'd really like to update to 9.2.2, download the updater from Apple and apply it to your working 9.1. It's a big download, but perhaps a Mac friend with a faster connection can help, or you can DL it overnight.

Also, I have come across a used iMac marked with these specs: 400MHz/512K L2/128MB/13GB/DVD/56K It's a slot load; family member #M5521 with 2 firewire ports. It comes in a medium grey/black case, so I'm thinking maybe it's a Graphite iMac? Anyway, they have it marked for $400. Is this a good deal?

It's about the going price for a Graphite iMac 400 DV. It's a (small) step up from your present machine in terms of functionality, but the big advantage with the DV is that it has FW ports, meaning you can attach large external hard drives or VERY fast CD-burners (I just "upgraded" mine to 52x! -- full CDs in 2.5 minutes!).

Should I get them to boot it up first, before I make a commitment?

Oh hell yes. If it's not in PERFECT condition, you should pass.

I don't think they have an Apple keyboard or mouse to boot it up with; would that be a problem?

Replacements are easy to find, but that's additional expense ... how would you control the machine after booting?

Could I use any generic usb ones? What should I look for, problem-wise, before i decide?

Look, the bottom line here is that you're going the cheap route. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but you have to do so with your eyes wide open. There are likely to be problems on anything that old unless it's sold as refurbished with a warranty. Seeing as how you can probably FIND one with at least some kind of warranty for around that same price*, my advice would be to go with a trusted dealer rather than HOPE that the scavenger hunt model you've located is defect-free.

*I found this one on Powermax.com -- the same model as we're discussing with a 90-day warranty for $469:
