With this advice, you are in the right ball park. You have one advantage
over a complete newbie by knowing your old digital camera. There is also
something to be said for exploring at camera stores which basically do just
that - cameras and related equipment. Go on a quiet Monday morning and get
the sales person to explain the features of the different brands within your
price range. You may find their prices to be competitive anyway, and you
get the benefit of expert advice which you are not likely to find with cash
register clerks at some discount houses.

As for features, I'd find it hard to go without a true zoom lens. As for
megapixels, go by the size of print you want to see at the photo quality
sharpness and color. Not everybody needs to get 8 x 10 inch prints. I
think some 3.1 megapixel cameras do pretty well up to that size. So a 2.1
megapixel camera for less money may be just fine for 5 x 7s. This is
perhaps the most important factor to check out.
