getting into an imac is not like opening a pc box and pulling out the component you want to get at. you don't need any special tools, but to get at the cd drive you have to remove the processor card and the entire mother board. theres 18 steps in all, but it sounds like your experienced with handling these things.

have a look at http://www.theimac.com/drive_steps.shtml to get an idea of whats involved.

I have about a decade of putting stuff in and out of PCs, but no Macintoshes. Would it be easy to open an iMac (do I need special tools, etc.)? Can I just put any IDE CD drive I want inside, or are there special requirements?
