I'm considering getting the "Apple VGA Display Adapter" to plug a CRT monitor into my flat-panel iMac, and I was wondering if anyone out there that has one of these, could tell me if it allows you to achieve higher resolutions on the CRT monitor, or if you're still regulated to the maximum of 1,024x768 that the flat-panel normally puts out?
When you come to the Displays Prefpane, you will get one appear on each monitor showing what resolutions/colours that monitor is capable of...i used to run my iBook (1024*768) with a 17" Studio Display (Blue CRT) at a considerably higher resolution, can't remember exactly, ????*1024 i think.
HOWEVER, the above only applies if you have Extended Desktop mode...
The iMac/iBook is not capable of Extended Desktop mode, only video mirroring... Apple Disabled this, but like all things, there is a reverse. ;) There is a script you can get that will enable Extended Desktop mode, but if your iMac uses the GForce2MX chipset, you're stuffed. ;) It won't work at all. I won't say where the script is here just incase it breaks one of many unwritten laws that nobody informed me of! ;) Google for it and you should find it. :)
Also note that using this script could void any warrantee you might have.
