Hi all, I'm new to this list, although I've been following a number of
other LEM lists for some time in an attempt to become familiar with Macs
having acquired (read scrounged/swapped) a few old units (mainly
030/040, but a couple of PPC ones too).
Having fun, eh?
Anyway, I've got the opportunity to bring my Mac kit bang up to the end
of the 20th century with a tray loading 266MHz iMac and thought I'd do a
quick post to make sure that this was a worthwhile move. (My newest
otherwise is a 7600/120 with a slightly faster processor iirc, although
the HD has just died).
My plan is to get a bit more familiar with Macs, use it for website testing for browser compatibility
Without hardware upgrade, you can put this to work with maybe half a dozen OS 9 browsers, including IE 5.1, Netscape versions 4.x, and 7, Mozilla, Opera, iCab.
and get my hands on a copy of OS X to
see what it is like (I'm a Linux user on the whole, apart from fixing
other peoples Windows boxes - so the new (well, newish) version of MacOS
holds a certain interest under the covers :-)
Go for OS X 10.3 and update to 10.3.6 with applicable security Updates. Don't bother with the older versions, unless you want to share old-time pains.
The machine looks to be OS X capable, but I'm wondering how well it is likely to run it, and whether there is a limit on the version it can take (so far there doesn't look to be from my investigation on the LEM and Apple sites). The spec is 266MHz, 96M RAM and 6G HD. Not sure about he HD, but the RAM I would certainly look to upgrade if I can find some compatible sticks in my box of bits!
Add at least 256 MB.
So to add to Dan Knight piece on the LEM list, does anyone have any personal experience of comments before I take the plunge?
No personal knowledge here on this machine, but the tech folks at Small Dog Electronics, in a recent weekly newsletter, mentioned that some old model iMacs have been coming into the shop, dead beyond hope. I do not recall the common failure part, but perhaps a search of their web site will get you to their newsletter, or perhaps a phone call will clue you in. Notice that Small Dog is a sponsor of this list which has a link to their web site.
