At about two years of age my iMac DV SE 400 MHz slot loader started to go through similar antics. It cured itself for a while, but then about 6 months later the problems came back and no amount of slapping the case will fix them. It works properly after bootup for 5, 10, or 30 minutes before the start of the crackling (accompanied by vertical stretching and horizontal squeezing of the screen image), but inevitably it freezes or shuts itself down. I learned that an experienced TV or computer repairman could fix it, but the parts and labor can amount to $200 or $300, not to mention shipping costs if it has to be sent away.
