iMac 350 slot loading given to me. 9.0.4, 6GB, 192MB with the firmware video problem. I figured out the fix of getting the screen to light up (waiting for desktop to load, sleeping iMac, waking up- screen appears) so I could hurry up and update to 9.1 and apply the 4.1.3 firmware patch to (hopefully) fix the video problem. I was very proud of myself and then did the worst- somehow I managed to install a bad System,[..]

Let's start by confirming that your video problem is firmware-related. The classic problem is a result of installing OS X on a machine with the older firmware. Was OS X installed on this iMac at one time?

Not sure, but possibly.

Is it still on?

No.

Also, I'm not clear on the current state of the machine. It came to you with 9.0.4. (And OS X?)

Not sure. After the last time I was able to boot (using the listen, sleep & wake trick- which supports that it's the firmware issue), I stupidly applied the wrong System disk (only a 9.0.4). When I tried running the firmware updater immediately after that, it informed me that I needed 9.1 to apply it. So, I forced quit out of the installer to update to 9.2.2 using a G4 iMac install disk, but when the installer came up, it said the System folder was not valid. Thinking a restart would fix it, I foolishly tried and cannot get back to even a blind startup. I have no way of knowing what's going on without the screen, and it won't boot. I'm almost ure in my haste, I foolishly managed to corrupt the System. Right now, I'm at the "symptom 4" (chimes, then iMac freezes 7- 10 seconds aftewards.)

Did you update the firmware or not?

No.

Did you update to OS 9.1 or not?

No.

What do you see on the screen after you powerup?

Black.
