I do have a slow launch of mail and sometimes when it seems to be checking for mail from the server (the small greyish circular image appears), it's basically locked up so that I can't read what's already in my mailbox. This is in Jag.
There are definitely some types of formatted email that still make Mail behave erratically and there were some particular problems handling certain types of messages a few iterations ago. In the case of the latter, the fix involved deleting the "LSMMap2" file (~/Library/Mail/LSMMap2), but the problem was corrected by a subsequent update. What version of Mail are you using?

I'm using the version with 10.2.8 [1.2.5 (v553)]
I have lots of hard drive space, but also really bad browser performance. A knowledgeable lista on OS X suggested I set up a new user and see if things are like that under a new account, but that will take me a while to do. I might also screw something up and not be able to log back into my admin/personal account, LOL! or ;(
