I haven't thoroughly tested all aspects by changing preference settings and removing or altering the arrangement of steps involved to repeat the process. It happens every time. Anyone who is interested in exact settings, and who has more patience than me for trying to duplicate this kind of condition, feel free to make contact off-list for more specifics. I suspect a glitch in OS X. Anyone who can suggest a key sequence to restore the screen without needing to be so drastic as to kill the power to force a restart, please let me know.
I had this issue a couple of times, but very rarely, and -- knock on wood -- not in a recent history. This was prior to me discovering Keychain trick; it was always time- or hot-corner-activated. I never found out what was the reason of that.
Somebody suggested force logout, but I always forget the shortcut key to test it. And it's almost as drastic as holding the power button anyway.
