I think I might be about to suggest what you don't want me to suggest: that you avoid the problem by simply putting the iMac to sleep instead of shutting it down. Mac OS X *prefers* sleep to shutdown, and the difference in the use of electricity is absolutely minimal. This will solve the problem.
