My sister-in-law just emailed me to ask if a CR-173-D drive on eBay, pulled from an iMac (apparently 233MHz based on the seller's other parts auction) which suffered video death, would work in one of her school's 233MHz iMacs (no word on whether either one is Rev A or B). I was about to say "sure," but a quick google search turned up not a lot of useful links, but did find this:

http://www.macfixitforums.com/php/showflat.php? Board=Forum11&Number=661965

which cited a source indicating they're NOT cross-compatible (but then leaves the issue unresolved).

Does anyone know the answer?

New drives that I found seem quite pricey - we're definitely looking for cheap here (elementary school media lab).

Thanks.

Anne
