i've had similar problems with pre 9 os's, you might want to try a clean reinstall of 8.6 or try 9.2.2

a lot of the flakier problems i've experienced over the years on macs, seem to me at least, to be down to something totally mysterious that got fixed with reinstalling classic and now os x

much as i love macs they still do weird things

Local nonprofit has an iMac, which when started up, usually has a frozen
cursor.

By pressing the power button on the case, letting it turn off, and
imediately pressing the 'on' button again, it will reboot and the cursor
operates normally.

The iMac has plenty of RAM and runs 8.6.

In addition, perhaps related, perhaps not, sometimes it refuses to wake
from sleep or wakes with the cursor frozen.

I've looked all over the Web for any hints and I have found none. I swapped
mouses in case it was a funky mouse. It's not.

Any suggestions?
