Thank you all for your cleaning tips. I am indeed a bit nervous about opening up the Mac, though it has been accomplished recently with the addition of a pram battery. I do cherish the 'bed as a soft landing' in case of droppage suggestion, as though some may think I look like Hercules, my strength has no resemblage.
I am flagging and saving all these kind responses, and will put them to good use soon enough, but for the time being, it's nice to have Madame Blueberry resting quietly without The Urchins (older brothers to The Toddler) arguing over whose turn it is to destroy the death star or some such nonsense. I will let you know the results of my spring cleaning, or of the next unnatural disaster, whichever comes first. And in the event no such event takes place, I'll make something up for your amusement.
