Hi Chris, Thanks for the reply, I must have acrobat 4 for Mac set up wrong, 
if I make a file in Quark 3.32, (I know all very old stuff, but it works) 
and distil to PDF I get the 3 files in windows and my acrobat 4,(win 
version) illustrator 9 or freehand 10 cannot open any of the files not even 
the one without any dots or dashes in front of it
