iPod question

I'm getting ready to replace my 2nd generation iPod with a new one. I 
plan on giving the iPod to my brother's stepson. When I use the reset 
to factory feature, does that also wipe out the iPod system updates 
from Apple that I've installed, or were those updates firmware 
updates?
