Ah, Kim, the only reason that the music industry
allows places like the iTunes Music Store,
Napster 2, etc., to exist is BECAUSE they have
implemented some form of DRM in the files. So in
that respect, Chas is correct.
However, if you are talking about non-commercial,
no-name music done by individuals an posted by
them for free distribution, then, yes they DON'T
have DRM encoding. However, the DRM law is so
damn restrictive, that there is a very good
chance a strict interpretation could be made to
require DRM ecoding in even those also. Oh, and
don't think that you can go get around the DRM
here in these United States by getting files from
Europe; the EU is working on even more
restrictive rules for there. Of course, that is
only to be expected as the European governments
(except Switzerland, maybe) have never trusted
their own citizens or believed that they should
have more freedom. It probably comes from the
thousands of years of authoritarian rule.
