User spaces

I am having trouble with the 4th user space in my computer.  I have a 
1GHz PowerPc G4 iMac with 512 MB of RAM.
I can create the 4th space, but when attempting to log in I get the 
spinning wheel of death.  I have deleted the space and reestablished it 
with a different user name.  This last time I logged in and as it 
switched it spun & spun.  Any ideas?
