You are talking about the CUDA button. It is a small button on the logic 
board. I don't remember off the top of my head where it is on an Rev A 
iMac (and it is in a different place for just about every Mac that has 
one).

This does a deep reset of the system settings, causing the Mac to repoll 
all bits of its hardware to redetermine all its settings. Usually you 
would use this when you change hardware (increase memory, change hard 
drives, install cards or CPU upgrades).

Since you are having problems, it may be something you want to give a 
shot. Just press and hold the button for a few seconds (usually easiest 
to do it with something like a pencil eraser, the button is small and 
fingers can't always press and reliably hold the button... at least not 
my big ones... I'm sure my wife's little hands would be better suited to 
the task)
