First of all, I want to thank you all for the help I've been getting. I am happy to have joined a list of such helpful and friendly people. However, I've read so many posts that I am a little confused. Regarding installing X, I got conflicting information, or it appears so (see below). Please someone explain to me what should I do:

The computer is an iMac G3/400;
10GB HD;
384RAM;
OS 9.2.1.

As others have already said, you don't need to partition: your iMac is not one of those affected by the 8GB limitation, and OS X and OS 9 can co-exist happily on the same volume.

Two things you do need to do before installing OS X (your backups are already up to date, right?):

1. Make sure your firmware is up to date (very important).

2. Update from 9.2.1 to 9.2.2.
