What isn't clear is that the printer uses something called "USB 2.0".
Because of my computer's age, I feel secure that it must have "USB 1.0".
Will the (assumed) difference in USB version be an obstacle to
compatibility?
No. It will just mean that the data rates from your USB 1.0 computer
to your USB 2.0 printer will be slower than if your computer had the
USB 2.0 interface. Likely as not you'll never notice the difference.
Another question, as an aside. My iMac has a printer driver,
"Laserwriter 8", that I have heard will run any Postscript Laser you
connect to your machine. Does anyone know if this is appropriate in the
case of this printer?
I looked around on Brother's website and didn't see anything which
lead me to believe that the printer you have is a Postscript printer.
Near as I can tell it uses something called GDI. As such, the
Laserwriter 8 driver probably won't work. That being said, there's no
harm in plugging the thing in and trying it!
