Hi,

I have a 15" flat panel imac, OS 10.3.8 and just hooked up a newly purchased LaCie 160 GB FireWire (400) external hard drive.

Seems to work great, very fast.

But..., sometimes, I'm getting a message about not being able to copy files because the file name has unrecognizable characters or is too long. In all cases I've had to change a "/" to a "_" to compete the process.

How can I get the new hard drive to handle file names like a mac does instead of like a pc does??

OS 9 machines used a colon ":" as a separator between folder names. OS X uses a slash "/". In either of these OSes these characters are not allowed in file / folder names. I know that OS X automatically translates a "/" into a ":" in these names. That's because while OS X won't let you create a file name with a "/" in it, it has no control over a disk already having it in the name when created on OS 9 for example. I don't know off hand what happens when you try to copy a file with one though. I suspect you are seeing it.

I think you are going to have to change the filenames. If you are familiar with it you can use the command line to do this but be careful, it's easy to shoot yourself in the foot with it, real easy too.
