Mike,
A similar thing happeded to my cube. One day I noticed that my mac had booted
up using the firewire drive, and the internal drive was completely invisible on
the desktop, and silent, just as if it wasn't even there. Unfortunately it
didn't come back agin like yours.

Yes, you do need a new hard drive, I think. at least I couldn't find any way of
coaxing life out of the old disk, even by swappingh it into my firewire
enclosure. Therefore I would feel much safer backing up the data and upgrading
to a new drive.

It was a Maxtor/Apple branded 20GB running at 5400rpm. Since then my external
drive failed 14 months into its 12 month warranty (It became noisy and
extraordinarily slow, so I was able to transfer my data to another drive, but
it took all day...). This was also a Maxtor (120GB, 7200rpm).

I therefore bought 2 new drives, both Hitachi (nee IBM) Deskstar, because they
come with a 3 year warranty, and cost hardly any extra.

I had also upgraded to a Superdrive: I wonder if the extra heat contributed to
the demise of my internal drive, or if it would have happened anyway.

It's kind of frustrating, since my old 1990 model IIsi is still running without
a single fault after nearly 15 years
