Well, in the preferences, iTunes still offers the option of burning MP3 CDs,
so if it can burn them, it should still be able to play them as well. I've
had no problems at all with the new version of iTunes (5.0?), so I'm
guessing it's either a preference not set correctly, you don't have the
latest version of OS X and/or QuickTime, or your CD drive is dying.

That last one happened to me a while back with my old tray-loader 333. It
would play store-bought CDs, but no longer would play or read burned CDs.
At first it was just a few discs that didn't work, but it got steadily worse
over time to the point the drive barely worked at all. At first I thought
it was the discs, but then most all of them would work fine on my external
USB CD burner. I have since gotten a newer iMac (Snow 500).

One other thing - some burned CDs just quit working. Period. Something
called "laser rot" I believe. In other words, sometimes playing them in an
older CD player can damage them because the laser is too strong and ruins
them.

Just my personal experiences. Your mileage may vary.
