Has anyone used XPostFacto to install Tiger on a tray load iMac?

I have a 333 MHz iMac that I have to reformat the drive on. . .
if I'm going to upgrade, how well does 10.4 Tiger work on it?

I know it isn't a supported machine, but I believe XPostFacto will allow
me to install Tiger on it. Has anyone done it? Is there any speed hit?
The machine has 384 MB of ram in it (it won't go any higher, I can't get
the lower slot to take a 256 MB chip).

I just installed Tiger on my father's 333, but I upgraded the drive at the same time and installed Tiger before putting the new drive into the iMac - I put it in a firewire case and installed from another machine with a DVD drive so I didn't have to hassle with the CD exchange.

Tray-loaders only need XPostFacto to get around Apple's limit on the installer; they don't need it to run Tiger (I've read somewhere & now confirmed).

Since the drive is larger & faster, I can't directly compare 10.4 to 10.3. But I've heard from others that Tiger seems just as fast as Panther, or a bit faster, when installed even on machines that don't officially support it.

I can say it was running just fine with 384MB of RAM. I'm lucky, and it happily upgraded to 512 last week when I put in the 256MB chip from my just-abandoned Wallstreet.

The only problem I have is one I've had for quite a while with this machine, not just under Tiger - if I do too much at once (like 2 finder actions, quit an app & while that's happening go to a menu), the machine freezes up. I've run memtest without finding anything, but I suspect some occasional hardware fault somewhere.

But my father never runs into that problem because he basically just reads mail & attachments & prints them, and doesn't move fast around the desktop like I do.
