I think the iMac in question is an upgraded tray-loader so the 4.1.9 firmware update (and the associated video woes if it's not installed) don't apply.
There's a firmware update 1.2 for these, released in 1999 so it may well have been installed long ago. The apple doc on it says it "should be installed on all iMac computers used in NetBoot client environment" so I don't know how crucial it is to a successful OS X install. I'd already done it to my father's 333 *long* before I put X on it so I have no experience with its absence.
(I have dealt with a slot-loader that didn't have 4.1.9; its video was wonky, but fortunately not black, at least on every boot; sometimes the screen would be all red, sometimes all green, but you could see what was on it so I could boot in 9 and install the firmware update.)
