I believe you can do such a swap without issue.

I believe all the slot load CRT iMacs used compatible power supply guts. 
So if you have a 600 MHz slot load CRT iMac with a dead power supply, CRT 
or otherwise, and a working 400 MHz version, you should be able to just 
swap the logic boards and thus bring the faster machine back to life.


The same applies to the tray load CRT iMacs, I believe you can safely 
swap logic boards between tray load models.

What you can NOT do is swap boards between iMac lines, so slot load 
models can't go into tray loads and vice versa (and the Flat Panels 
models are right out).
